You probably haven't heard of Kim Peek — that's almost a gimme — but you've seen him played on the big screen by Dustin Hoffman.
Hoffman, you might remember, won an Oscar for his portrayal of Tom Cruise's autistic brother in "Rain Man." The brother was modeled on Peek, who will be in attendance, along with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Barry Morrow, at the 2 p.m. Saturday screening of "Rain Man" at the Old Theatre Mall in Livermore.
The appearance is part of the 11th annual California Independent Film Festival, with runs Thursday through April 19 at a host of venues in the Livermore Valley and at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville. Morrow and Peek, will field questions from the audience after the screening.
Besides a fat slate of features, documentaries, shorts and animation, the feast includes an 8 p.m. Friday showing of "On Golden Pond" at the Vine in Livermore, with Oscar-nominated director Mark Rydell introducing the film and taking part in a Q-and-A session afterward. Three-time Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd will be honored with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Blackhawk Museum.
