VOLUNTEER GUIDE – 2010 Festival dates: April 22 - 25
What you can expect: As a volunteer, you can expect to be treated as a valuable part of our event team. We want this to be a positive experience for everyone. You should expect to work hard while having fun.
What we expect:
Please arrive for your scheduled shift on time and be ready to work. We expect volunteers to greet patrons with a smile, respect, and courtesy at all times. If possible, please familiarize yourself with the schedule of events and the venues in order to answer questions if they arise. Volunteers are expected to “pitch in” wherever needed, work hard and enjoy the Festival. If you are going to be late for your assignment, please call the coordinator of your event right away.
Promoting the CA Independent Film Festival:
We would like our volunteers to be active in promoting the Film Festival to our local friends and co-workers. This is an exciting local event and we need to spread the word that it is a very good entertainment value and is open to the public. Many local people are excited that filmmakers and celebrity actors are here but they do not see it as a public event. It is imperative that we change that perception this year. If each volunteer introduced 10 new viewers, we would have 1,000 additional passes sold. A committee is being formed to promote the Festival to local audiences. Please inquire how you can help.
How do I volunteer?
To volunteer, e-mail Beau Behan (beau@caiff.org) or call 925-277-1355. Beau will coordinate matching volunteers to chairpersons of special events. If chairpersons of events request additional volunteers, Beau will e-mail all the volunteers on the list and provide contact information for the volunteer to contact the chairperson if they are able to work on a specific special event. Once the volunteer is coordinated with the chairperson, all contact will be within the subcommittee.
Volunteers who choose to work at the film screenings will be coordinated directly through Beau Behan or the Volunteer Coordinator. This is the area where we will use 90% of our volunteers. We will need film announcers, will call table and ticket sellers at Orinda Theatre.
Benefits of Volunteering:
For those who love film, it is a unique opportunity to glimpse inside the world of the independent filmmaker. You will no doubt, make new friends among the volunteers and organizers, as well as the possibility of meeting people within the industry. Along with the fun, the organizers have also allowed every volunteer to use their ID badges as a pass to the Saturday and Sunday film screenings. It is a great way to see the festival. Special ticketed events are NOT included.
Self Promotion:
We ask that volunteers refrain from engaging in self-promotion and or distribution of self-promotional items to filmmakers or film representatives while on duty as a volunteer. The Festival provides a wonderful opportunity to network and there are specific events scheduled which will allow you to meet and greet filmmakers when you are off duty. Please contact the film office or refer to the program for further information on how to purchase tickets to those events.
Film Selection Committee
Films are pre-selected by teams of reviewers for each category of film. This is done between the months of June and December. If you are interested in being involved in the selection process, please email Marti Connell (marti@caiff.org).
